Before The Coffee » Photography

Jerry Hayes of flickr asks: “Hey Ferrell, how many exposures and what spacing did you use… if you don’t mind me asking.”

Hey Jerry,
HDR was made for scenes like this. It’s high contrast; a single image was not even close to capturing the full dynamic range. The anti-HDR photographers would have never been able to pull this one off. The single image would either be loaded with noise inside or blown outside.

This was 7 images at 1ev spacing and that was comfortably within the DR of the scene.

Jerry has some pretty cool HDR work at his flickr site, also some LucisArt. Jerry is a printer and a self-professed “big kid”: http://www.flickr.com/photos/jerryhayesaustin/

This is something that bugged me for a long time now. Why do so many cameras support only a small number of automatically bracketed snapshots. For example, I have a cheap Olympus snapshot camera, C70 Zoom, and it can make 5 shots at 1 EV. However, they’re best DSLR model, the E-500, can take only 3. Why is that? Is it so complicated to make cameras that don’t lack any major features other cameras have?ReplyCancel

    “The anti-HDR photographers…”

There’s such a thing as an anti-HDR photographer? Jeesh, what next.

It’s like railing against that pesky color photography, only Black and White is True Photography.

I gotta say, I love it. This is a super strong photo. Just spectacular.

I recently shot and constructed my first panoramic photos, using the Photomerge feature in Photoshop Elements which goes a long way in helping line things up and I take it from there. I have had so much fun doing it. If some knucklehead said I shouldn’t do that because the software gave me a head start, I’d give them my older daughter’s patented eye-roll. (She’s a master at it.)

Anyhoo, us mere mortals love your HDR work. Keep it up. I might graduate to trying my hand at them myself some day.ReplyCancel

Cindy has been living on the streets for 7 years. I asked her if she feels safe and she said yes as long as she stays right in this area (near the white house where secret service patrols). I asked if she has family that can help her out and she said “no not anymore.” I gave her some money and she perked up and said she will try to pay me back. I told her it’s a gift no need to. I couldn’t help noticing the fabric she had wrapped around her fingers, they were knotted and twisted and tied almost decoratively. What were they for – maybe a nervous habit, maybe to hide the scars of her past. Maybe it was her “jewelry,” notice she’s wearing a washer as a necklace.

Wow. I do love your portraits. And yes, I noticed the washer, the butterflies, the blues, purples, the bricks (horizontal), the wood grains, Cindy’s expression, her hair, her freckles, the look of eternity in her eyes. I know something about eternity.ReplyCancel

Yes, you’re right, Bellefonte is close to State College, home of Penn State. It does get a little chilly in the winter so getting a coat is a good thing.ReplyCancel

Some contemplate the past, others the future and some wait in anticipation for an exit.

Hi, I love your gallery… if I’ve some times I take some photos too. I know nobody likes that if someone just copy his pictures, so I’ve wanted to ask that, can I use your images in my blog to the writings?

    Best wishes!ReplyCancel

They were skipping and dancing through the promenade so I said, “Isn’t it a great day, are you all family?” “yes indeed we are sisters, cousins and moms” Everyone was so happy I just couldn’t leave without clicking one.

Can you believe it, Chihluly got rid of all his bad glass in this pond and two fisherman pulled it in.

Thanks for the Corcoran, etc. “preview.” I like that. I love the Sunset boat pics, and thank you for the intro. to Dale Chihluly. Prodigiously prolific, ceramic, sculpture, glass, color, line, assembly, movement, installation, environment – what fun to be introduced, and what a pleasure.
