Jerry Hayes of flickr asks: “Hey Ferrell, how many exposures and what spacing did you use… if you don’t mind me asking.”
Hey Jerry,
HDR was made for scenes like this. It’s high contrast; a single image was not even close to capturing the full dynamic range. The anti-HDR photographers would have never been able to pull this one off. The single image would either be loaded with noise inside or blown outside.
This was 7 images at 1ev spacing and that was comfortably within the DR of the scene.
Jerry has some pretty cool HDR work at his flickr site, also some LucisArt. Jerry is a printer and a self-professed “big kid”: http://www.flickr.com/photos/jerryhayesaustin/
This is something that bugged me for a long time now. Why do so many cameras support only a small number of automatically bracketed snapshots. For example, I have a cheap Olympus snapshot camera, C70 Zoom, and it can make 5 shots at 1 EV. However, they’re best DSLR model, the E-500, can take only 3. Why is that? Is it so complicated to make cameras that don’t lack any major features other cameras have?
“The anti-HDR photographers…”
There’s such a thing as an anti-HDR photographer? Jeesh, what next.
It’s like railing against that pesky color photography, only Black and White is True Photography.
I gotta say, I love it. This is a super strong photo. Just spectacular.
I recently shot and constructed my first panoramic photos, using the Photomerge feature in Photoshop Elements which goes a long way in helping line things up and I take it from there. I have had so much fun doing it. If some knucklehead said I shouldn’t do that because the software gave me a head start, I’d give them my older daughter’s patented eye-roll. (She’s a master at it.)
Anyhoo, us mere mortals love your HDR work. Keep it up. I might graduate to trying my hand at them myself some day.
Great HDR
Will make a link to it from my HDR – How to make one and why

This is a great shot. I went to school here on the campus of the National Cathedral, and have seen many beautiful shots of the place, but this is one of my favorite that I have ever seen.
