Before The Coffee » Photography

I was invited to the local high school to teach the photography class, portrait studio work. I took my strobes and set them up in the computer room. We did a few types of lighting and then the party started. Scarf, gloves and fake snow each student had a task there was a makeup artists, stylists, lightingman, fanman and even snowman. The snowman (men) went wild and the room was a mess. Hey, all in the name of teaching the art of photography.

This is one lovely shot! And the model did a very good job as well! Is this your picture or did the students make it? I bet it could get a pretty penny in some magazine…ReplyCancel

Stunning Ferrell. So is this an HDR image or just a straight shot. You are getting so good at your HDR images it is getting hard to tell!

    John

    Hi John,
This is a straight shot with some PS retouching. Have a great day!

    This is a nice image.

Thank you so much for your HDR tutorials. Someone from Flickr pointed to your website, and I’m just beginning to explore your blog.ReplyCancel

Whoa. Gorgeous. And here’s me, totally in the dark about what HDR even STANDS for. In the meantime, I use real snow and whatever light is available and tweak a bit in Photoshop and voila! It’s not as shiny and amazing, but it IS organic. 🙂ReplyCancel

I did some clicking for the local emo band Elias. Emo is short for “emotional” and this band has mastered the art of screaming better than any actress fleeing a psychopathic killer in a Quentin Tarintino movie. Go for it guys you rock. Good luck with the 08′ cd.

I had them spread the word that I want to shoot more bands. If you know a band that needs images, let me know.

Casey (lead guitar), George (drums), Daniel (lead singer), Davante (bass), Quigg (lead/rhythm guitar) Shot with two strobes, I got down low so they appear standing on the tracks in an odd sort of scaling.

Casey (left) showed up with a shirt that I was able to match with the graffitti.

I told them a train could come. When it did there was panic in the tunnel, they stopped posing and started running their asses off. I got off a shot just as the train entered the tunnel and then merged the pic of the train with the earlier one of them posing.

Shortly after this photo shoot the band cut a CD under a new name: Rescue the Hero. Here is the CD cover. Kara was the model, I came across this house in northern Maryland and stopped and got some shots and tried not to look like a creeper. I went to the metro parking area and paid the cabbie $5 to take a pic of his car, he was happy because he didn’t even have to start the engine and he made 5 bucks.

I must say that you have one hell of an eye for catching the right pictures at the right time.
    Keep up the great work.

the 3rd photo is perfect. it showcases the “location” as well as the emo band pose. i’m sure you’ve left that band with a lasting impression. by word-of-mouth you’ll be known as that “daredevil photographer who takes great pics”.ReplyCancel

The brochures for the show at the Corcoran. The most moving pic of Annie’s is the fallen bicycle of a teenage boy just killed by a sniper. Annie actually put him in her car and he died on the way to the hospital. The bottom right pic is Annie’s brother Philip and father. Annie’s two famous shots of which she received awards are of John Lennon taken the day he was shot and the iconic image of Demi Moore for Vanity Fair.

Here is Annie’s shot of Nicole Kidman

David is a lonely man living on the streets of DC, he told me so. So naturally, I take the high road and tell David that I’ve got a nice blonde girl for him to meet. Remember Cindy, see a few posts ago for Cindy’s picture. I think they would make a nice couple. David is smart, a little shy and best of all sober. Cindy is gentle, caring and very chatty. Now I just have to get David to the other side of town for them to meet. I see a reality TV show in the making.

Wonderful photo. I like your DC people pics as much as your DC architecture. I hope they meet. How do you find the time to play matchmaker? and possibly script writing?ReplyCancel

When shooting around the monument I met Peter Lerman and his friend Cindy. He’s a local Virgina musician that was putting together a video for his latest song “Abraham.” He picked the right place to do the video. At first they tried to scoot out of camera view and I asked them to “stay in the picture, I’d love to get some clicks of you.”

If you want to check out the song he’s on Myspace: http://www.myspace.com/peterlerman

I just wanted to say how much I enjoy your photo blog. I’ve been getting the RSS feed for about six months and I am always thrilled to see when you’ve added your latest post. I don’t even remember how I stumbled on it, but I live in Lincoln, Nebraska and started getting back into photography this year after a 10 year hiatus. I am especially fired up about your Australia pics as I just found out last week that I’m going to Melbourne for five weeks. Any tips on visiting the country?

    Keep up the great work!

    Aaron

Aaron, you must try the Australian dessert called Pavlova, named after the Russian Ballerina. It is wonderful. Also, make very, very sure that you have a 220-110v converter and adapter for using your 110v electric items, in their plug sockets. The adapter simply turns your plug with blades into a plug with posts. Also, check you camera’s battery charger, it may be rated for 220v-110v, my Nikon charger was and didn’t need a converter but did need the adapter. Be prepared for higher prices than US prices. Good Luck, let me know when you post some pics.ReplyCancel

I’m a year behind but thanks for the tips. I had more than my fair share of pavlova and thankfully had the right converters. An amazing trip!
