Before The Coffee » Photography

My neighbor came walking down the street with her camera and friends to shoot some pics at the local reservoir. We stopped and talked about photography and later started emailing. Her name is Tory and she is an up and coming portrait photographer that posts on Instagram.

Tory had an idea for a shoot so we decided to collaborate, she’d bring the models and I’d set up the lighting and studio. The theme was LGBT and all were welcome, supporters, advocates or those that identified themselves as LGBT.

LGBT stands for Lesbian, Gay, Bi-Sexual and Transgender. Some abbreviations have an “Q” on the end as an option to include “Questioning,” LBGTQ.

It was an amazing event. They weren’t the popular high school superficial crowd. They were awkward, funky and most of all supportive of each other. 13 people came, some wanted to have their pic taken, some didn’t.

There was talk about being Gay and talk about hurt from other students. They wrote on cards the words that have hurt them, then with the shutter clicking they tore them up. Some finished with tears in their eyes. They were so open and accepting of each other. I’d love to do a documentary video of the group.

I set up a cyan gel shooting into a reflector on the floor in front, a red gel shooting into a reflector to the left and a beauty dish to my right and above, no gel. At times I removed the colored gels.

Merry has such a sweet mannerism. When she arrived she told a friend she didn’t want her pic taken  “only doing makeup". I asked her later and she said she’d try. After the shoot Tory told me she loved it and wants to do it again.

Shooting with the Batis 85mm F/1.8.

Off the ground in the middle of a skip, admittedly I got lucky with the timing. 85mm, f/2.0, 1/160sec, ISO200. Lock on AF: flexible Spot S.

I knew she was going to run back to me. I went to manual focus and used the focus magnify feature (possible with mirrorless) to focus on the dark crack in the sidewalk. When she got to that point I "clicked." 85mm, f/2.0, 1/250, ISO1000.

It doesn’t happen often that an ordinary scene of the beach becomes extraordinary. It was one of those mornings when the weather patterns seemed to change by the minute. The light was isolated as a bright area and then dimmed in a beautiful transition to shade. The clouds in the first pic had a softness, yet beautiful contrast and diagonal layering – it looks like a long exposure yet the waves are in stark contrast with sharp edges. I really like the interesting foam patterns in the foreground swash area.

The second scene is a color image and has a very special and unique quality. The light reaches down in a large central area, then in a transition to the background a dark band separates two bright areas. The sun at the top margin highlights the stirring clouds as they make room for the burning sun.
