Monument Valley

This is Monument Valley with some pretty extreme HDR. It’s hard to get the scale here but if you look hard you’ll see a car parked on the road.

Wow…very interesting…only in Monument Valley is the moon viewable in the north…everywhere else on the planet it moves east to west.ReplyCancel

  • bogus - March 11, 2009 - 3:15 pm

It’s not possible for a full moon to be at that angle at just before sunrise.ReplyCancel

  • Marc Hester - March 21, 2009 - 7:04 pm

bogus is correct. If this is a sunrise shot, then the moon is pasted in.
Bogus and Marc, It’s not sunrise but sunset, it’s not a full moon but 1 day before, it’s not pasted in.ReplyCancel

Ferrell – My apologies. This is looking east, not north, and that is where the moon rises. It’s a beautiful image from an artistic standpoint, but way far removed from reality. As you point out above, it is an extreme use of HDR! The reality is that there simply would not be light of that much intensity on the monuments while earth shadow is taking place. (Earth shadow is literally the shadow of the earth cast on the atmosphere by the sun from below the horizon, resulting in colored bands, typically blue with pink above.) My feeling about HDR is that it’s great if not overdone.ReplyCancel

How hard is it to travel and stay in the Monument Valley UT area. It looks vast on the map, with almost no towns and few roads. Any insights are appreciated, and you can email them to me if that works.ReplyCancel

Hi, Good shot. Sorry but extremely overdone. U simply cant keep increasing the strength to improve details and raise the color saturation. I feel If you print this pic with even 3X of current size it would be a too noisy(correct me if I am wrong). Good pic to be shown in a smaller size.

When we do HDR, there is always a trade off between Strength and real feel and this pic has gone to far with the strength, making it extremely surreal. Good try though.

Hi Anand, As I mentioned in the caption, this image is some pretty extreme HDR and it demonstrates the point, U CAN keep increasing the strength if it fulfills your vision as an artist. Of course a drawback is noise but there are HDR techniques to minimize it as I’ve spelled out in my book. The editors of Shutterbug magazine felt the image of Monument Valley was good enough to print for the cover of their magazine. Thank you for visiting my site, FerrellReplyCancel
